Vamos! CounterPress heads to Spain as La Liga London joins the network

Spanish football fans rejoice, a new site dedicated entirely to English-language coverage of LaLiga is set to launch on CounterPress.

Spanish football fans rejoice, a new site dedicated entirely to English-language coverage of LaLiga is set to launch on CounterPress.

La Liga London launches later this month, promising intelligent, impartial coverage of Spanish football's top tier - from super-clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona to newly promoted sides Racing Santander, Deportivo La Coruña and Malaga - and everything in between. A one-stop shop for all things LaLiga.

The site is fronted by journalist Rahul Lakhani, whose journey into LaLiga began during his time at The University of Edinburgh, where he set up La Liga London on Twitter alongside his studies. What initially began as a hobby, has since reached new heights.

After developing an interest in Spanish football from a young age, Rahul found an affinity with Villarreal, with the story of the Yellow Submarine drawing him in long before he even considered journalism as a career.

One problem he found was a lack of English language coverage of Villarreal, or indeed anyone in Spain outside of the biggest clubs. He set out to change that with La Liga London, and during his time as a journalist covering Spanish football and more, he has become a go-to voice for the stories beyond the big two.

This journey led him from the UK to Spain, where he now resides in Valencia, and covers all things LaLiga for a variety of outlets. While you can find him across social media, and as a co-host of The Tiki Tapas Podcast, this new voyage with CounterPress Media will help showcase the full extent of Rahul’s knowledge of both LaLiga and life in Spain.

"My passion for Spanish football is always growing, and CounterPress have given me the platform to provide the kind of English-language coverage that Spanish football has lacked, but truly deserves."

La Liga London members can look forward to tactical analysis, player profiles, first-hand matchday experiences, on-the-whistle reports and plenty more coverage of LaLiga in detail which cannot be found elsewhere.

While mainstream media coverage may continue to focus solely on Barcelona and Real Madrid, the players, coaches, clubs and stories across the division will be explored with great care and detail, directly from Spain.

Rahul said: "For me, La Liga London started out as a simple hobby, but it has become my life. When I first set up the Twitter account in 2020, simply as a means of talking about LaLiga with other interested people, I could not have imagined it becoming a career.

"My passion for Spanish football is always growing, and CounterPress have given me the platform to provide the kind of English-language coverage that Spanish football has lacked, but truly deserves.

"One of my ambitions during this season is to attend a game at every single ground in LaLiga, and alongside more news-based pieces or tactical breakdowns, subscribers can expect personal, first-hand accounts of what it is like to experience LaLiga in the flesh.

"I am often asked about players who move from LaLiga to other countries, and I will aim to provide even further coverage of these talents on La Liga London, with the likes of Victor Muñoz going from Osasuna to Liverpool, and Pep Chavarria joining Chelsea from Rayo Vallecano.

"They may be relative unknowns to many, but they are players I have closely watched for a long time."

La Liga London is the first CounterPress site dedicated entirely to an overseas football league, and joins a growing roster of sports websites on the network.

“The support network CounterPress provides will offer Rahul guidance, experience, and know-how. And no doubt he’ll teach us a thing or two along the way. It’s going to be fun.”

Sam Morshead, CounterPress

CounterPress offers the technical infrastructure and industry knowledge and support that journalists and creators need to build their own media brand.

Co-founder Sam Morshead said: "Rahul is an ambitious, self-starting young journalist who wants to take the brand he founded on social media up a level but didn’t necessarily have the tools and backing to take the leap.

“His La Liga London project is exactly the sort of initiative CounterPress was built to support, and I’m delighted to be going on the journey with him.

“It is a difficult time for young sports journalists to squeeze into the industry, and many of those who do often don’t get the sort of mentoring those of us from older generations enjoyed.

“The support network CounterPress provides will offer Rahul guidance, experience, and know-how. And no doubt he’ll teach us a thing or two along the way. It’s going to be fun.”

Be a part of change.
